Advancing Digital Skills for European SMEs – Project Recap

After three years of collaboration, innovation, and learning, DigiAdvance has officially concluded. Co-funded by the European Union under the DIGITAL Europe Programme, the project set out with a simple but challenging question: how do we help Europe’s SMEs keep up in a context that seems to invent a new technology every other day?

The answer brought together universities, industry experts, and innovators from across Europe to design specialised training and share knowledge. Along the way, DigiAdvance worked to strengthen SMEs’ digital capabilities, equipping them with the skills, tools, and confidence to navigate everything from artificial intelligence to data-driven decision-making.

The DigiAdvance Core Mission

Digital transformation is reshaping industries across Europe, but for many SMEs, keeping up can sometimes feel like trying to board a train that’s already left the station. New technologies appear at a remarkable pace, and for smaller companies, finding the time, resources, and training needed to understand and implement them is not always straightforward. Many face practical hurdles such as limited access to relevant upskilling opportunities, uncertainty about which digital skills matter most, and the constant challenge of balancing innovation with day-to-day business operations.

DigiAdvance was created to tackle these challenges head-on. The project focused on:

  • Identifying the real digital skills gaps affecting SMEs
  • Developing targeted training programmes tailored to their needs
  • Strengthening collaboration between academia and industry
  • Supporting SME leaders, managers, and employees in their digital transition

By bringing together leading institutions and industry partners from Ireland, Spain, and Portugal, DigiAdvance created a collaborative space where research, practical expertise, and real business needs could meet, turning complex technological change into accessible learning opportunities.
